Got some new downlighters for the bathroom, mainly because the existing ones are ancient and let a lot of hot air up into the loft space (which is well ventilated!). New ones are fire rated. Usual problem, the cutout for the new lights is somewhat smaller than that for the old lights. Typical! And half the ceiling is old lath and plaster which crumbles at the edges etc. So fire up Fusion 360 (3D cad programme), design a ring with the requisite 4mm thickness and about 12mm deep for the thickness of the plaster, ID to be a cosy fit on the new lights and OD a bit of a loose fit in the existing holes (to allow room for some plaster to hold it all together). Slice, then fire up the 3D printer...
Some time later (3D printing is not fast!) I now have 5 ABS rings inserted into the ceiling. Just waiting for the glue and plaster to set, then I can re-insert the downlights and all will be draft-proof. 3D printer is one of those things you never knew you needed, but once you have one you can't imagine life without it!
I have also installed a new bathroom fan with a rather swanky iris thing that opens when the fan goes on, and closes when the fan stops to avoid drafts coming back down the vent pipe and/or all that very expensive house heat going up it. Jeff loves it, it is like a Moonbase docking port! Ceiling knackered as previously mentioned, so I cut out a couple of ft square and inserted some plasterboard pre-cut with the hole for the vent fan (which was quite a bit bigger than the previous fan, which had started screaming). Bit of slightly dodgy plaster skimming, but it looks OK. Just waiting for the plaster to dry properly then I can paint it.

Most of my ceilings are old lathe and plaster.. the grand kids are forbidden to leap off beds etc 3D printer sounds very exciting but I do suspect it is something I can live without! I think the stairs may well have to go on that 'must do something' list as grandson keeps showing me the chunks of plaster that are falling off under them.

For ages been finding my "must do something" list was getting longer and longer, I have started ticking some of them off (inch by inch) but a few more keep catching the corner of my eye .... at the moment I am avoiding looking directly at them. When I finish the jobs I'm at I will need a break so I am trying to pretend the new ones don't exist

I’m renovating my parents old house which I rent out. The last tenants trashed it and stopped paying rent, they owe me £8k in rent, it cost £1.5k to remove the rubbish they left behind and renovations are set to top £15k. Thankfully there is no mortgage on the property so it could be even worse. The reason I mention this is that the hall, stairs and landing ceilings were lath & plaster, my dad covered it with Artex in the 70s…… which contained asbestos, so that was a order £500 to remove it safely! In dad’s defence, he removed the lath and plaster (plaster? black mortar) from all the other walls and ceilings himself and re plastered the lot, we ate black dust for months!

It's all still there under a plaster skim, it was easier to cover than remove.

Just out of the engine room for a break and a mug of soup
The frustration of these jobs is getting to me ..... I seem to be hitting snags every bloody step of the way. Yesterday was the new circuit breakers .... I'm underwhealmed by the contact area of the connections so spent most of yesterday making a load of brass spacers 50mm cables all connected, new 4Kw inverter installed and wired, batteries connected. output changed over, RJ11 data plug switched from the old to the new. The inverters are the same make, same series, just 4Kw instead of 3Kw. Switched the shore mains off ..... expecting inverter to automatically kick in.
Nada .... zilch .... bugger !!! check everything, all correct, try again (yeah I know but one sometimes has to just hope it's a glitch)
Disconnect the remote control, turn off mains and manually switch on inverter ... yup works fine. So reconnect old inverter, turn off shore power Bingo !!! everything hunkey dorey ..... double bugger !!!
On phone to company .... yup, you guessed it, after years of all their pure sinewave inverters using the same remote .....this one is different !!! New one on it's way..... but I will have to open it up and modify it straight away ... I need it to accept a pair of relay contacts as the start signal.
Now lost all enthusiasm for today !!! Knew everything was going too well !!! getting the rum bottle out .... sod everything !!!

Asbestos stopped being used in Artex in the mid/late eighties depending on the supplier and was banned sometime about 1990. My house was built in 1986 and has had Artex from new, so borderline hence the testing

Its unlikely you would find it but you never know?
The type of asbestos found in artex is chrysotile, also known as white asbestos, which wasn't banned in the UK until 1999.

Artex as a brand stopped using asbestos in 1984 however other textured coatings didn't and I had no way of knowing if it was actually Artex or not. Hence the first thing we did was to get samples taken and tested.

I aint disagreeing with you, its just that like you we tested all textured coverings when I worked for AH Allen and partners which later became AH Allen Ltd. Because the stuff was so good we used to find it everywhere, Black corrugated sheds often galvestos, the black bitumen was mixed with asbestos to stop it slumping.

Then there are floor tiles held down by bitumen. Asbestos was a wonder substance, what a shame its so lethal.
