Up out of the engineroom for a coffee break. Yesterday was a bloody awful day work wise. I started trying to fit the 19mm id rubber radiator hose sections that join the Whispergen's circuating pump to the standard plumbing I had already installed. I had mounted the pump on the unistrut frame with padded pipe clips .... fine, solid and protected from vibration. However when trying to fit the hoses the curve in the pipe was too tight and it was tending to a) cause the pipe to flatten and b) put too much strain on the outlet of the whispergen. It's a bastard, I am having to change the unistrut frame to fit the pump in a better position and of course all the other piping is on munson rings fitted to the unistrut. Changing the frame also means that some of the rigid pipework needs to be changed as well ..... yesterday was definitely one step forward and several back. Fitting the rubber hose to the header tank (found a Iveco Daley one is ideal size) was also a real pain ... I don't know what size id pipe Iveco use but I think it must be a fraction bigger. Getting it over the moulding was impersossible .... I even unbolted the tank from the bulkhead so I could get more pressure on it but no way. In the end I had to chamfer the end of the plastic and then with plenty of Fairy Liquid and much blasphemy .... it went on !!! This morning I have finished the part strip down of the pipework and the frame and after my coffee break I will hopefully start on the onward and upward bit again This total overhaul of the heating systems on Sabina has turned into a proper marathon, I seem to have been doing nothing else for months now. I have even missed out on a couple of trips, the last one I did was the tug collection from Portland and that was about 7 months ago !!! I'm getting withdrawl symptoms !!! i have always had the pump just on pipes not fastened down its quieter that way...............tried ringing but no answer from the depths of the engine bay

It was starting to get darkish by the time I came out of the engine room .... you lose track of the time when you are working in a space that has only artificial lighting. Frame all modified, pump fitted and the 19mm rubber heater hose fitted ..... eventually !!! that stuff really doesn't want to go over the hose tails !!! (of course I didn't get to speak to Peterboat until I came out of the engine room this evening .... ) most (but not all) the pipework re-routed and re-connected, (some had to be replaced because the original bits were too short etc.) As often happens the re-routed pipework looks a lot neater than the original way ..... I think you notice neater routes after you see it all in place. Hopefully finish the plumbing side (apart from the fuel lines which are mostly in place as the supply for the 6Kw gen I took out) Still all the electrics to do of course. Still today did seem to have gone in the right direction. Cheered me up a bit .... I was feeling a bit down after yesterday debacle

Take care x Hopefully John with a little v will stop and rest and take a few jaunts out on those boats/ships that are calling from that distant (or not so distant) horizon. Before long I shall be answering the call of the Worm....its time I got back up there Now and again I think we all need to stop and take stock...

Well I will certainly be taking the rest of this afternoon off !!! Finally finished the plumbing part of the job only the electrickery part to do (only .... only .... only .... ) I will start planning that tomorrow. Quite pleased how it went together (in the end) The pump pipe runs are pretty straight and hopefully shouldn't give problems. The unistrut frame is rock solid (yeah I know, overengineered ... but that's a familly trait) The enginroom is a mass of piping but I'm pleased enough, everything is (just) accessible SAM_3837 by mudlarker, on Flickr

after spending the weekend in Much Thunking, today was at Get Stuckin. I had spent some time yesterday looking at the batteries and had decided that there was room for the third set of Lithiums on the same shelf as the other two pairs. At the moment they are on a lower shelf. If I was right and they would go there then the engine batteries plus any other ancilliary ones that might appear could fit on the bottom shelf (all the lead acids together) That seemed a lot better (and possibly quicker .... not an unimportant factor A small amount of woodwork to alter the bars and spacers and YES !!! they do fit !!! Batteries now in new position and battened in place to prevent movement. That completely frees up the lower shelf, plenty of room for several lead acids. Taking the cables for the engine off the cable tray and removing the cable tray is not wasted work as although it takes more or less the same route as before, it is not exactly the same and needs to be lowered by several inches so they can go under a step built to give a stepping place where the bilge rolls upwards. Holes drilled for the metal brackets holding the wooden cross beams for the ply backing board for the extended electrical area. Fortunately for my wallet the 90 degree brackets 2.5" x 1.5" crossbeams, and the 3' x 2' 12mm ply sheet all came out of the store I just needed long bolts. That was good because my poor old plastic took another hammering today ordered two consumer board cases (got the breakers) and 2 new batteries for the main engine. I have been looking at the rest of the things I need and hopefully most of them will come out of my stores as well. Not a bad day, drilling the 12mm holes for the new board was about the hardest as you are trying to wedge yourself in place on sloping shiny (ish ) hull plating. and of course as per normal on here it's bloody thick steel you are trying to drill !!!

Well I finally got to the bottom of the non running problem on the genny, the printed circuit board had some breaks in the tracks and a dry joint to one of the relays, it now starts instantly. However the issue with keeping it going still is the problem the diesel bug still keeps on blocking the lift pipe from the tank, I have Marine 16 in it so I will rig up a cleaning circuit with my clever filter and hopefull i will clean the problem out, but thats a job for tomorrow

Out of the engine room for a break and lunch ....knackered and an afternoon still to go. New Engine batteries delivered to garage over the road yesterday .... collected this morning. both batteries now down in the engine room and the two old batteries on deck. One seems half way decent so will go as extra domestic on Shapfell. The other one will join the steadily growing heap to take to the scrap man. New batteries on bottom shelf in the battery locker alongside the single 12V for the engine room crane (which did the lifting in and out) New retaining battens cut and fitted and new hole cut through bulkhead for Engine start cables. New flooring section for easier access to the new electrical panel just needs painting now. Need to get the vacuum cleaner in there next to suck up all the drilling swarf. I think that as gor to be the next stage .... get all the bits done so far painted and tidied .... don't think I will paint the wall panel Sabina's engine room is much more of an industrial/commercial one than andyberg swish looking arrangements

Another long working day yesterday. Ah well as regards not painting the wall panel ...... it's now varnished Did a heck of a lot of putting away and sorting out , a lot of groups of things that I am finished with for now like plastic plumbimg bits, copper plumbing bits unistrut bits etc have now been sorted, packed into their respective crates and put away, Stuff that I want to keep but not on board, has gone back into the container. Center Floor plates lifted and the mess exposed. There was a fair bit of water in the bilge from various spillages during the modifications to the main central heating pipework and it was pretty mucky there (it's been too long since it was last checked) there was weed trapped in a couple of corners that has been there since 2020 ) After it was cleaned out I found there was quite a lot of rust and scale in the inch or so above the concrete sole (about 18 inches wide in the vee of the bilge) that will need to be chipped and painted before the floor goes back down (the bloody job list gets longer before I can finish anything) Today I'll take up the rest of the floor plates .... it should be completely dry there but there will undoubtably be an assortment of lost nuts and bolts, screwdrivers, spanners etc (as well as the normal detritus needing vacuuming). The rest shouldn't need painting as it has always been dry I also want to pop along to the drydock to show my face and see how things are progressing there.

It has a 4 pin three phase plug (and all the sockets there are 5 pin) could I make up an extension cable with a 5pin on one end and a 4pin on the other? (the answer is no ... I will change the plug on the machine to 5 pin and make up a 5pinto 5pin extension, their suggestion is a backwards step)
Back on board having a lunch break then into the engine room to start my work !!!

What's wrong with a 5>4pin adapter using 4 core cable? Provided of course the current ratings are the same. If you are replacing a 4pin 16 amp connector with a 5pin 32amp connector that is a no no unless the supply is fused at 16amps.

Anybody ever had sticky diesel? its not the diesel its a residue, its blocked my fuelguard washable filter element solid!! the filter bowl would stick to your fingers its that sticky. I have rigged a separate fuel supply for the genny for the moment but its a fuel cleaning job I think to sort this out
