Been two steps forward and one step back on every single part of this re-vamp of the heating and electrical circuitry. I'm knackered and fed up to the back teeth with this, It has probably been a bigger job than I should have taken on. I cannot work the long days I used to and I am noticing how much slower I am, even compared to just a couple of years ago. With the result, this has dragged on for week after week. Probably would have been just about ok if everything had gone even reasonably smoothly. However it seemed that every stage introduced a new job as it showed the existing systems to be inadequate for expansion. Ah well, worse things happen at sea, or so they say. I am pottering for the next couple of days as I am waiting a replacement part, as I said .... every stage (sigh). I probably will spend some of the time having a major sort out of all my tools and returning them to their correct places. I did a service on a mates car including the coolant this morning, then it was to Bluecoats Spoons to you lot had a couple of pints of stout and a very nice Brunch, waiting a while then over to Jaynes

Well twerpv3 was deffo right about the benefits of having a day or two doing something else.# I spent yesterday sorting out the tools, putting things away in their right place (and searching for bits that had done a disappearing act) ... (as is their wont) Then started on my electrical stores .... they consisted of half a dozen crates stuffed, with everything all mixed up. As some of the bits were small you sometimes had to tip it all out to find what you were after. Went down the road to Trotters Independent Traders ( real shop ) and bought a load of various size clear plastic boxes with clip on lids. Everything is now sorted out into categories and five of the crates filled with boxes. Each crate has a label with the categories inside and I have a written list of which box has what !!! My stores have never been as well sorted !!! (and I've turfed out a lot of junk) and I actually enjoyed the change Tomorrow will also be different as I have a wood collection morning and then a water run in the afternoon So thank you very much Twerp !!! On Monday I should be able to get back to the job much refreshed

That's something I need to do I have huge amounts of stuff that really needs sorting. I can usually find stuff if I remember that I actually have it.

Moving plug sockets today. Have a joyous morning of crawling around in the void under the floor. For some reason the previous inhabitants put in way more cable than needed (a change of plan maybe), so will tack it all up before crawling out. However far better than finding banjo strings Definitely. However I did come across one cable with a bare end!!! Copious amounts of electrical tape to be on the safe side

Boit more graft in the Dunboat Inn, paint is all finished, just trim round floor and some vinyl tiles behind the bar, then the fun stuff begins, electrics/audio & visual and booze!

Spent the afternoon battling with fitting a new suspension level sensor to the car - the rear one failed and threw out the headlights and the electronic dampers. Just 4 screws and a connector, how difficult could it be? VERY difficult, as it turns out, due to rusted screws, inaccessibility etc. Anyway it’s done now, fault codes cleared. Hooray. But whilst grovelling around under the car I noticed that one of the coil springs was broken. I think I have had enough of under-car grovelling and I’ll get it done at a garage.

Awaiting a call back from the garage with a price…

…especially now I have discovered that the front right spring is also broken! Awaiting a call back from the garage with a price… Will you get both sides done ? I didn't do them both once and within weeks the other side went🤔 Hoping not to, although of course that is the recommended course of action. That would mean 4 new springs! At the moment there is no noticable tilt to the car, no difference in clearance between tyre and wheel arch, so I think the system is fairly tolerant of differences in spring stiffness/length because the anti-roll bars are quite strong. As you say it might be that the other side goes fairly quickly afterwards, but then again I had to replace one front shocker last year at great expense (it has electonic damping control) and the other side is still going strong...
Garage hasn't called back yet so I might end up doing it myself, 2 springs are about £120 total and I have some coil spring compressors somewhere.

I avoid springs to much chance of it going wrong 🥱 telemachus is in the firing line for a homemade hair lip 🤦♂️ For what it’s worth the rears are a piece of cake, I’d do them at home, However, the fronts can be an utter bastard. I sent my Octavia to my mates place in Kempston and kindly let him struggle to get the drive shafts out the hubs, VW group profits hinge on leaving the splines dry as a Nuns Crotchet- complete free of any lubricating compound 🤦♂️ He had a tough time on a ramp, doing it on the drive would have been much less fun It’s worth replacing the top mounts and the drop links while it’s all in bits - it’s also worth getting VW bits from your local TPS rather than using pattern shite from Euro Car Parts or wherever

Obviously the actual front springs are taken off once the struts are off. I hear what you say about the drive shafts, only consolation is that the same side shocker was replaced in February so it has been off relatively recently. Whether they lubed it is another matter of course! I have a spacious garage so not going to do it outside - this is Scotland in December (nearly!). 200nm is a lot of torque though! The TPS parts are about 50% more expensive and I’m not inclined to lust after OEM springs - after all these springs were OEM and only lasted 80,000 miles. This is the first car I’ve ever owned that has broken springs, all the previous cars (Saabs, Subarus) did way over 100k miles so clearly VW OEM springs are a bit shit, just like their brake discs! Autosave has quoted for Lesjofors front spring - a reasonable make I think - and BRA rear which perhaps is a bit low budget. But if they only last 50k miles that will probably see the car out. Ill have a look at the top mount and drop link bushing but not going to replace them unless they actually need doing (This is Scotland you know). Anyway, if I survive I will let you know… but I’ll probably wait until next week to do it.

Today spent getting 240v travelpower alternator mount modified to get it perfectly in line, excessive squeal and slight wear on outer belt face highlighting the issue. Full usable mains power now restored! 👍
