These guys had the right idea when it came to caravans. I saw an episode where they hung a Freedom Caravan like mine from a balloon, I think they dropped it. Do we get in your way when you want to go too fast, bless. Or are you one of the idiots that sits in the second lane at 59mph when I'm towing at 65 (including my 10% allowance) and won't move over to let me past. Just think of it as a dunboatin bar on wheels.

Calm down Jim, its just a funny video, no need to get defensive over your box on wheels.

I lived in a box on wheels for 2/3 long months.. 3 kids.. bucket for toilet.. basic didn't describe it. Never wanted to holiday in one since

Looking at my battery temp last, in a loft with no insulation above or around the battery, so gets bloody cold up there, temp never dropped below 10c, outside temp was below zero i think last night.
I think if you have box on wheels plugged into the house and the battery is always being monitored/trickle fed? then it shouldn't really need any insulation?

I think if you have box on wheels plugged into the house and the battery is always being monitored/trickle fed? then it shouldn't really need any insulation? Well I think there is a big difference between a loft space above a heated house and with a lot of thermal mass, vs a caravan outside. I think it’s likely that the inside of the caravan and the batteries would get below zero after a few hours of negative temperature. That said, of course the issue with Li batteries is only during actual charging process - to do with the much slowed ability of the Li batteries to absorb any current via the normal process. But if the batteries are on a float charge then no significant current will be flowing into the batteries and thus it doesn’t matter if they get cold. So if the batteries have been on float for a while such that there is no significant charge current, then it doesn’t matter if they get very cold. One just needs to be sure that the float voltage is appropriate for Li, ie around 13.2 to 13.3v

Stuck a thermometer on top of the battery this afternoon, it was 0c, mid afternoon. It's under one of the bed seats, not an external locker. I will keep monitoring it, get an idea of what's going on, it will be a week or so before we go away in it. I did not intend to keep it on charge/float, there's only the battery level indicator light showing, so no major drain on it. Re the float voltage, not sure I can do much about it, the caravan system charger is built in. I intend to fit a volt meter display so I can monitor it and turn the charger on and off. twerpv3, maybe you should get your expert answer in before telemachus. Then he can agree. Or not🤣🤣🤣🤣

be careful when buying a meter for using with Li, with a lot of the cheap digital ones you get won't give a really accurate voltage get at least a three and a half digit display or even better a 4 digit display this will give you a reading to two decimal places which means you at least know when you are starting to creep close to your limits

Thanks all, for now I will monitor the battery with a meter, charge it when it needs it, until I can sort out the right charger. I'll check what the caravan charger is putting out on float too.

Obviously it will depend on the model of charger, and I’m not sure if things have changed recently(in the last 10 years or so) but in general caravan chargers tended to be low-tec fixed output at around 13.8v as a compromise. No multi-stage bulk / absorption / float phases.
